Still Painting in Acrylics, Haltingly, Dec 2018

Ok, so apparently WordPress has changed quite a bit since my last post three months ago and/or the WordPress update I just did this morning. Dangit. I liked it the way it was. Isn’t this always the case? I am just now, begrudgingly, used to the new Gmail. Grrr.

Here is a painting of fish bones!

Fishbones, 8″ x 10″ acrylics on canvas board. www.theslumberingherd.com

I can tell you these fish bones were painted under some duress. Already days late for a Secret Santa at illustratedatcs.com, the themes I had to work with included Corgi dogs, skulls or other anatomical type bone studies, famous artists, cityscapes. I found some nice reference photos for Corgis and these fish bones. And while some of you reading this thing may be able to produce art on a tight deadline, that is not a thing I have ever had much success with.

Perhaps as a result of completing these fish bones – at the fifty-second hour, til the wee hours of the morning  (and including the mini Corgis in ink, below)  – I should start considering myself someone who can, in fact, finish pretty decent work on a tight deadline. The stress though. Dang.

Here’s progress pics! And like every painting I have ever painted to date, I almost gave up several times. I actually started a new canvas, thinking I’d try a Corgi. But since I was already a couple hours in, I decided to try to finish it. Always try to finish it! That is important. ;)

Oh! And here are the corgis! Three ATCs (2.5″ x 3.5″ miniature art)

Fluffy and Big-Nose Sketching, for December

Hello! Thank you for stopping by my neglected (again!) blog! I also have a neglected Tumblr and Flickr account. Woo! I do try to post new art to Facebook, if you want to see more things.

It is December 13th. I wanted to write a book this year, and though I did not finish a book, the plan to write a book actually did spur some book-related writing! So, now instead of a vague idea for a book, I have 3-5 ideas and some scribbles to go with each!

Meanwhile, I’ve been sketching a variety of big-nose and fluffy creatures, while watching my current favorite show in all of the universe – Agatha Christie’s Poirot. I don’t know if the show has influenced the drawings, but if so, I don’t mind!

Pencil sketches, 2.5" x 3.5", Poirot set three!

Pencil sketches, 2.5" x 3.5", Poirot set four

Pencil sketches, 2.5″ x 3.5″, Poirot set four

I have this idea to paint some of these characters, likely in acrylics. But as some of you may know, I have had the HARDEST time getting myself to start painting. It’s the whole – tons of supplies to set up, cleaning up, the brushes the mess, oh my! But it could happen. And if it does, I shall post about it here.

Thank you kindly for stopping by! If it’s your first visit, I will try not to wait another six weeks for the next posting! If you’ve been here before and returned, thank you ever so kindly. You’re all the very best. :)

I am just going to come right out and tell you, I have not found, let alone joined, a life drawing class. I did get a new easel and started a 12″ x 16″ canvas. It shall probably be a cat in fancy clothes. I will let you know!

Thanks for dropping in!

Bright Blue Maiden and Poster Progress

Brigid the Acolyte
5″ x 7″ Copics, fine liners, gel pen

I’ve been getting up to something larger than 2.5″ x 3.5″ (ATC size) lately. With this I couldn’t decide what to do with the background so I doodled. It’s a bit sparse but I didn’t want it to compete with the figure. Submitted for the topic “Mask” at Illustration Friday.

ALSO! I have ordered test prints of a Dogs poster (finally) and one with animals in fancy clothes.

Art Card Dogs poster, Version I.
16″ x 20″ and including twenty individual art card dogs

Fancy Clothes Animals Poster Version I
Aesop’s Stables Theatre Company, 12″ x 18″

People seem to prefer the black background but I may do both. All opinions welcome! Sorry for so much stuff in one post!

Three Themes Diverged in a Wood and I Took Them All

A very odd mix of inked art cards, for various purposes, all came together this weekend:

Ruby Meadowlark, The Shih Tzu Envoy, and Twisted Circus Twins
Each 2.5″ x 2.5″ Copics, fine liners, white gel pen

Ruby is spirit sister to Zoe Meadowlark, seen here in a gallery of Spirit Mask art cards.

The Shih Tzu Envoy arrived in Lhasa with Lord Stinkeye, the manic Chihuahua.

And the circus twins, well. Only the fourth addition to the My Dark Side Gallery! People seem to like these dark ones. I do not quite grasp the allure. Perhaps because I tend toward anxiety about the world and I don’t need to add a bunch of creepy characters to the repertoire of my nightmare-making mind?

I think that’s it, actually. Thanks for dropping in! Progress pics below.

The Princess Violet, Sheep and Songwriter

Princess Violet and Fiona Riona Bologna
Each 2.5″ x 3.5″ Copics, fine liners, white gel pen

The Princess Violet was a difficult sheep child, a source of rarely ending exasperation for Fiona, her governess. When feeling particularly cheeky or impatient with her studies, Violet would sing little songs about a wise old fruit seller called Fiona Riona Bologna who sometimes played matchmaker to a succession of curious characters in a small Italian village.

Cats and Dogs and Poofs and Plans, Oh My!

The Princess of Whispers
2.5″ x 3.5″ Copics, uni PIN pens, Staedtler pens, Uniball Signo

Are we sick of animals in fancy clothes yet? We are not! Or at least, I am not! And I hope you are not! These are all the recent ones:

Fancy Dress Dogs and Cats, the First Eight
Each 2.5″ x 3.5″ Copics, fine liners, gel pen on Bristol

So, quite a long time ago (it seems!) I started the Art Card Dogs project. Holy cow I just checked and I haven’t added to it for over a  year. Maybe this summer I can finally get it together and make a poster/bath sheet/bedspread/shower curtain/car seats (or who knows!) out of some of these art card collections. Unfortunately, summertime is busy time at my job (construction industry), but as my life keep reminding me, I am not getting younger!

Thanks so much for dropping in! All suggestions regarding merchandising are most welcome!

Lord Stinkeye Chihuahua, Pen and Ink

Lord Stinkeye
2.5″ x 3.5″ Copics, fine liners, white gel pen

A fine person called Sarah (The WonderStrumpet!) posted a pic of her dog Tigi in a discussion about fancy clothes, so it seemed clear she was hoping he would end up in some. And so he  has. (Though his nose is too big in my version, arrrgh.)

Side-by-Side Chihuahuas
Two photos by Sarah, with Lord Stinkeye between
(Also, I cropped the photos.) :)

Not too bad! He doesn’t look like a Stinkeye, but perhaps he was more ornery in a misspent youth. (And to be fair, she didn’t say he WAS a stink eye. Only that he gave her one. And who hasn’t given a stink eye or two?)

Hello to Paint Party Friday! And one more thing. I made a Flickr set of fancy clothes (human and beast) Woo!
