Haunt for Illustration Friday, and Captain Nemo

Haunty House, 6″ x 9″ Copics, fine liners, white gel pen

The topic is Haunt at Illustration Friday. I decided to try a larger version of my little spook house ATCs. It doesn’t actually have much more detail than the tinier size, but I do like the vulture! Also, I forgot the “Keep Out” sign. Dangit.

The other thing I did this weekend is this Captain Nemo ATC, for a Steam-Powered swap at illustratedatcs.com. To remind those who aren’t familiar, an ATC is an Artist Trading Card, sized 2.5″ x 3.5″, and usually traded from one artist to another. The sites I belong to are atcsforall, which is for everyone, and illustratedatcs, which is a juried site for folks with a fair amount of experience. They are both great! And also responsible for a lot of art and inspiration in the last few months.

Captain Nemo ATC
2.5″ x 3.5″ Pencil, Copics, fine liners

Captain Nemo is the result of about 1.5 months worth of stressing over having to produce a kind of a portrait of an actual person. But in the end I chose Captain Nemo because instead of a portrait of one of the actors who played the character, his unique outfit really helps determine who it is. (Also the little nameplate I added helps!)

It is a relief to finally have him done, much of his face left in pencil because I didn’t want to destroy it with a stray pen line. When I started him I never thought I’d end up with anything approaching a decent face (the first sketch in the progress set below came after a lot of restarts and erasing), but I kept at it, which is all you can do. :)

Progress pics below. Thank you so much for stopping in!

Oh! One more note! I have a blog pal called Moonsword who finds cool art all over the interwebs and posts about them. He is having a giveaway for a $25 Etsy gift certificate. Go leave a comment on this post and you’ll be entered to win!

Love the haunted house variations. If you look at it cock-eyed, the door can be the screaming mouth and the windows the eyes. Pretty spooky.

And Captain Nemo looks very good, even if he didn’t want to co-operate with you. I like his gray hair. Sometimes knowing when to stop is the best decision for the whole piece.

I love the crookedness (is that a word) of these houses, Cindy. And the little eyes peeking out the window are a nice detail addition. I enjoy how even though the house is boarded up and a bit creepy… it has a warmth that’s inviting thanks to your color choices. Nice Job Cindy!

I like all your houses, you certainly are busy.

I’m working on my own haunted house right now. Due to be finished by next Halloween! I love the eyes in the bushes and the spirit behind the boards. Halloween is just so darn fun.

Many thanks oh Shepherdess of the Slumbering Beasts!
Your Haunted Houses are screamingly cool! I’m so tempted to join the ATC groups just so I can trade a haunt or two. Nemo is outstanding! That was one of my favorite movies as a kid…I drew so many subs after that one. Cheers!

Splendid haunted houses……I LOVE the wonderful detailed textures…..from the elaborate shingles to wooden grained doors & wooden planks. AND the crooked gutters…..what fun! AND the googling eyed bushes…..hilarious! Great job Cindy!

Nice and creepy even though its just a cartoon…it is isn’t it?!!:) I think its poignant that you left off the keep out sign…I don’t think anybody would want to get in and the guy in the top window can’t get out. That green seaweed bush thing looks very dangerous!!

All the eyes peeping out everywhere definitely make this appear haunted. The eyes in the bushes are killing me- so great! I especially love the roof and the drainpipe.

Love your spooky little houses – spooky yet still cute, I’d like a house like one of those :) Well done for persevering with Nemo, you’ve done a great job, faces are always the hardest! :)

Oh, I just LOVE that haunted house – totally awesome! And a special mention for those glowing-white pairs of eyes lurking in the undergrowth (are they attached to small, furry mammals? Or perhaps ghosts intimidated by the rather severe-looking – though entirely brilliant – vulture…?!). Great stuff :)

That vulture is supercool. And that scary little house is scary enough without the sign! I love that gigantic moon with the bats in silhouette.
