The Princess Violet, Sheep and Songwriter

Princess Violet and Fiona Riona Bologna
Each 2.5″ x 3.5″ Copics, fine liners, white gel pen

The Princess Violet was a difficult sheep child, a source of rarely ending exasperation for Fiona, her governess. When feeling particularly cheeky or impatient with her studies, Violet would sing little songs about a wise old fruit seller called Fiona Riona Bologna who sometimes played matchmaker to a succession of curious characters in a small Italian village.

Lord Stinkeye Chihuahua, Pen and Ink

Lord Stinkeye
2.5″ x 3.5″ Copics, fine liners, white gel pen

A fine person called Sarah (The WonderStrumpet!) posted a pic of her dog Tigi in a discussion about fancy clothes, so it seemed clear she was hoping he would end up in some. And so he  has. (Though his nose is too big in my version, arrrgh.)

Side-by-Side Chihuahuas
Two photos by Sarah, with Lord Stinkeye between
(Also, I cropped the photos.) :)

Not too bad! He doesn’t look like a Stinkeye, but perhaps he was more ornery in a misspent youth. (And to be fair, she didn’t say he WAS a stink eye. Only that he gave her one. And who hasn’t given a stink eye or two?)

Hello to Paint Party Friday! And one more thing. I made a Flickr set of fancy clothes (human and beast) Woo!

Love Triangle, Fancy Feline Edition

Lady Hisst
2.5″ x 3.5″ Copic markers, uni PIN pens, gel pen

You may remember Lady Mrowr from just a few days ago. This is her sister and rival, Lady Hisst. Both are currently vying for the affections of Sir Thom Kyatten, Duke of Dandelion (below).

Each 2.5″ x 3.5″ Copics, fine liners, white gel pen

I know I was hooked on themed mermaids just a short week ago, but I may be switching to animals in elegant attire for a while. Super fun, you should try it. :)

Submitted to Paint Party Friday! Happy PPF! Thanks for dropping in!

More Girls With Text, Pen and Ink

29 Faces, so close to the end! <sad face> It’s also Paint Party Friday (though it’s Copics and ink this week).

Two More Skinny Cards with Text
Each 3″ x 7″ ink and acrylics on Bristol vellum

This is the companion pair to my last post, for a skinny pages with text swap. Skinny pages are 3″ x 7″. Neat size! (They are faces number 23 and 24.)

On the left, “Mistakes are proof that you are trying.” (author unknown) On the right, “Rosie likes opera, jellyfish and dominoes. Rhubarb, ragtime, and ocelots. She likes quiet time and comfortable chairs. She does not like Speedos.” (written by me. More high art!)

Thanks for dropping in!

Another Girl and Her Dog, Acrylics

The Slumbering Herd post number 250 is Face #14! And it is Valentine’s Day. AND, also Paint Party Friday!

She Lost Him in the Divorce
6″ x 6″ Acrylics on canvas board

Sarah Trumpp and I briefly discussed whether this cross-posting, double-duty business was wrong. I believe we decided in the end not to worry about it too much. :)

I have a feeling I should try some things without the black outlines all the time. With this one, I went back to sketching and I like the result. Sometimes a sketch is nice way to go about it.

I had to stop last night at about the 9th frame, below. I haven’t been getting enough sleep and that makes for a rough workday. However, I think it benefited from drying completely before I took another run at it. More patience I must learn. Pffft.

Thanks for stopping in!

Daughter of the Mantis Clan, Acrylics on Canvas

Hooray for Face Number 8, for the February 29 Faces challenge! And also Paint Party Friday, for which I am one day late – but yesterday was drawings not paintings. :)

Daughter of the Mantis Clan
5″ x 7″ Acrylics on stretched canvas

I felt a little burnt out the last couple days. I had (have!) several started canvases I didn’t like at all. Even though I knew if I worked with them eventually they would be better. Finally these crazy bug eyes appealed to me so I just kept at it.

Tons of progress pics below, including lots of very ugly intermediate steps. You just gotta keep at it! Which is what I keep saying. Thanks for stopping in! (Continued apologies for the photography and lighting omg.)

Flower Girl, Acrylics and Ink for Day 25

Flower Girl
5″ x 7″ Acrylics and ink on canvas board

It’s Day 25 of Leslie Saeta’s 30 Paintings in 30 Days! And my second Paint Party Friday, wooo! I’m so glad PPF will still be here when the challenge ends. Oh! And Sarah’s brand new 50 Canvases in 2014.

I did not love this image at first. It was flat and lifeless and not very interesting. And I thought, I must power through it – they will not all be masterpieces. And then I remembered that thing that always happens, which is that you’re not just “finishing” a thing as you go (inked or painted or otherwise), you’re continually improving it. And in the end I got to a place I like. Also: layers. The best color comes from layers, at least in my limited (25 days!) of acrylic painting thus far.

Thanks for stopping in!

Day 17 and Paint Party Friday, Acrylics

Day 17 of the 30 day challenge! Also joining Paint Party Friday because I have been painting! This is canvas number 7. (The other ten days of the challenge thus far were made up of pen and ink or acrylics and ink as I gathered acrylic supplies and started learning to paint.)

Daphne, Portrait in Blue
5″ x 7″ Acrylics on Canvas Board

Fortunately it occurred to me to scan this one. (Much better quality than my terrible pictures, as in the progress pics below.)

I have done several maidens in frames, and an art pal named Sarah Trumpp, doing a painting challenge of her own,  reminded me I might like to paint one. So I did! Lots of progress pics below, as her face went through various incarnations before settling on this one.

Here’s a few of the early tiny framed girls:

Three Maidens in Tiny Frames
Each 3.5″ x 3.5″ Copics, fine liners, white gel pen

Lost Portrait of Emily, Tudor Maiden Portrait, and Anastasia of the North. Because if I’m going to spend that much time on 2.5″ x 3.5″, it’s gonna get a nice name. :)

Thanks for dropping in!
